Volunteering is not only wonderfully rewarding, but is a magnificent way to improve your skills. It only makes practical sense to learn something for free when the opportunity arises. Think about what it will do for you and your family. You will be a spectacular example for your children, other family, co-workers and friends.
Volunteering in the market-place is an absolute sure-fire way to meet new people and make new contacts. Networking is one of the most important aspects, and volunteering is a great way to do this. It will advance your job search in the right direction.
In one of my previous office jobs, an elderly gentleman was hired to work in the quality department. Now, we're talking about maybe fifteen years ago. Presently, we see many seniors out in the work field, but at that time, not so many. This man was in his seventies. I was totally amazed with his talent. The graphic skills that he knew and taught the rest of us were fantastic!
When you volunteer you can learn goal setting and budgetary skills. And, if you're helping to train others in the volunteer field, you can also develop supervisory skills.
A choice to volunteer gives you a positive sense of well-being which can improve your health tremendously.
Also, if you are already employed, many part-time volunteers accomplish more at their jobs at work through a new promotion or a higher salary from their new volunteer skills.
The first thing that you need to do is assess your skills. By going to your local job website, you may be able to find career quizzes and testing to help you do just that.
If you're looking for a public relations job, or a job in a medical setting such as a nursing home or hospital, a great place to start is indeed at a nursing home or hospital. If you love to be around animals and would enjoy breaking into this field of work, you can maybe volunteer at animal shelters or animal hospitals. By searching and browsing the internet, you can find many lists of local charity organizations or community listings which can help you with your exciting new venture. There are volunteer matching services online that you can investigate. Almost anywhere that accepts donations, will also have the need for volunteers. Do be careful however, with donating any sum of money online or from an email, unless you are familiar with the source and know exactly where the money is going.
By being a dedicated hard working volunteer, you will achieve great success and fabulous references, which we all know, can be very helpful in the job marketplace. Don't forget to indicate these references on your resume.
People have different reasons for volunteering. Some do it for that feel-good feeling which is the best feeling in the world! Others do it to fill time and boredom when there is now an empty nest or a new retirement soon approaching or already here. Many are professionals who do it to expand their horizons and some even offer their services to stay mentally alert between jobs.
It's good to keep certain things in mind when looking for volunteer jobs. Will you need a car to do the job? If the answer is yes to this question, then find out if you will be compensated for your expenses. Not all volunteer work compensates for fuel, and if so, it may be a very minimal amount. Figure your expenses and budget out, before making that final decision. Another question you could ask yourself is whether you will be reimbursed if additional training is required.
Next, you will need to ask yourself how much time you can afford to give to volunteering. Some organizations may only require one to two hours per week, while others may require more than ten, and so on.
There's always something that everyone can do to help others and volunteer. Over 70% of employers will select a candidate who has done volunteer work. So if you want a better chance to get a job, become a volunteer. Now again don't forget to place these new skills and references on your resume!
