Your Reference Letter Is Like Gold: I actually read recently that HR was starting to play down the value of your reference letters. Why? Because they figure you would only include a reference letter with your cover letter, if they were good. DUH! Recruiters will always verify your story through reference letters. The better you get along with your references, and check in from time to time, the better. Many employers will update your reference letter, years after you have left the comapny. Which again speaks to your credibility and good relationship with that reference. Always give your reference a courtesy call, a heads up if you like, that they might receive a call from XYZ company. You would never want a reference getting a call, and being caught off guard. When you can tie a reference letter to a cover letter, and a resume, you have tremendous continuiy.
If you have been a volunteer, there are reference letters there as well. It's non-paid work I know, but work nonetheless. Volunteer references on a resume or are like gold, because these references have had a chance to know you, your working style, and your people skills every bit as well as an employer. A volunteer reference letter counts for a great deal and should always be included in your or resume. Remember, they speak to your personal credibility and integrity. In my book, anyone who speaks well of your integrity, is telling me all I need to know about the heart and soul of who you really are. Reference letters are an essential part of your and resume package.
Today's recruiter is highly trained and more professional, and will always take your and reference letters seriously. Cultivate your references by simply staying in touch. Pick up the phone and get caught up, you just never know when that reference is going to help land that job for you. A good reference letter is almost like insider trading.
