Understanding the proper way to write a resume that will highlight your skills and accomplishments can be frustrating. In order to help make your resume successful and catch the hiring managers eye, ensure the finished product is clear, well thought out, easy on the eye and fits the requirements of the position you're aiming for.

Before you look at the proper way to write a resume, take step back and thoroughly prepare. Grab a note pad and list down all the things you have achieved that are relevant to the position you are after. This can include achievements such as business cost savings, management improvements and improved efficiencies your skills made possible.
If your applying for a variety of jobs positions with different companies, each application will need a tailored resume. Your resumes will need to be customized, focusing on specific skills and experience which the job description is asking for.
Keep your work history short and to the point and remember it is best to only list your most current positions you have held. Employers prefer applicants who have been in their current position for at least three years, so keep this in mind when completing your resume. If your employment history is made up of lots of short-term work, then look to use the functional or hybrid resume format.
There are a number of resume formats you can use, so make sure the format you choose best illustrates your skills and accomplishments. Try and keep your resume to one page and present it on white paper. Hiring managers like things they are familiar with, so don't send in a wacky resume or one with differing fonts. If you have decided to change career then add an objective, otherwise a summary will do.
Understanding the proper way to write a resume takes hard work and time, so learning how to rewrite, edit and proof read the finished article is important. Before you send your resume, get into the habit of asking a family member or friend to read it. Basic errors such as poor spelling, bad grammar and punctuation are common.
