A doctors note or a doctors excuse letter is a legal document that can be used to excuse you due to any valid medical condition and may be for various purposes. These can excuse you from work depending on your company's rules and policies. It may not excuse your absence but it can allow you to use up your sick leaves or vacation leaves while still get paid for the time you couldn't come to work.
Not all notes signed by a doctor can be accepted as a valid doctors note; these should contain four major elements. These are the doctors information - including name and address, the date the note was created, the name of the patient involved or securing the doctors note, and a certification of medical consultation. It can also contain some instructions for the patient to follow, when it is safe to return to work and under what conditions he may continue his work.
Doctors notes are strictly followed by employers as they may be accused of practicing medicine without a license if they violate this or have you do something not allowed by the attending physician. Your employer may be sanctioned and liable if you incur any further injuries resulting to not complying with the doctors orders.
Aside from work, the doctors note may also be used to secure handicap stickers, special medications and it can excuse you from jury duty or from performing heavy work. However, do note that not all companies would accept a doctors note due to company policies and depending on the state that they live in.
