As we all know unemployment is on the rise. In February 2009 alone, the United States shed another 651,000 jobs bringing the total job loses for 2008-2009 to a staggering 12.5 million. Unfortunately, if you are reading this article you may be part of these statics. I am here to tell you that all hope is not lost, this is a perfect opportunity to dust off and fix up that old resume. I will show you some secret tips that is sure to spice up your resume and make it stand out amongst the millions of other applicants.
I consider these tips to be in order of most important.
1.) Use a design that grabs your attention
It's no lie that employers make snap judgments when glancing at your resume. If they see unrelated job titles or skills that do not match the profile of the job, it is very likely that they will make an immediate assumption that you are not qualified and the resume is in the trash. In addition, managers are busy people, they do not have the time to read every single word on your resume. You need to add content that jumps out and says I am qualified for this job by only looking at the resume for under 1 minute.
2.) Tweak your resume to the specific job you are applying for
Learn how to analyze the keywords that employers use in the help wanted ads or the job postings online. These are telling you exactly what the employer wants, its your duty to craft your resume to fit these needs. Do not lie on your resume, just structure your words and use experiences from past work that make a good and interesting fit with the job you are applying for.
3.) Create content that sells yourself and your work related experiences
Be very descriptive of your skill and abilities, the better you are able to explain what types of work situations you have already been involved in the more interviews you will generate and bigger salaries will be offered. Rather than saying you managed accounts for the marketing and sales department, say you have managed well over 100 accounts, some with fortune 500 companies for the marketing and sales department.
4.) Prioritize the content of your resume
A huge mistake that many job seekers make is to talk about important information at the end of the resume! If you have followed the first few steps in the article the potential employer has now seen your resume because it stood out, is interested in reading more, now is the time to present the most important information you can provide. As you build your resume prioritize it by importance, impressiveness and relevance to the job you want. Remember that a strong statement which uses power words and quantifies will affect every statement under it.
5.) Double check your resume for misspellings and grammatical errors.
If you make any spelling mistakes in your resume, you might as well throw it in the garbage. A resume with even just one typo is a turn off to potential employers. These types of errors give employers a bad impression of you, like you don't care, are lazy, or you just don't review your work properly.
I hope that these tips help you in your current job search and that you are able to get the job of your dreams. All it takes is to get the employer to give you an interview, the rest is up to you.
