Too Much Talk About You: Well isn't that the goal? Mostly yes! As long as it's story telling, and not about you in any self serving way, and there is a huge difference. How many I's are in your cover letter? More than four is just too many. Self-serving sucks ... period! It sounds harsh I know, but really, self-serving is worst of the bunch. Just me me me ! If it's in your cover letter, it's headed right for the trash can and rightfully so. Save the real "how great you are stuff" for the job interview. When you are confident and can back it up with examples, no one will fault your assertive style. When you are blowing your own horn with fluff, they always know.
If you want to explain your achievements as being relevant to the job at hand, then absolutely go for it. None of the "I know I can be an asset to your company stuff" you are wasting valuable words that really say nothing. Make it personal and job related, and that will make me want to read your full blueprint, which is that resume. A is your letter of introduction. Don't insult your resume, with a weakly crafted cover letter.
You know recruiters these days are very educated and professional, so they can spot a self-serving in a heartbeat. It fools no one, and the loser in the end, is you.
They say "when the student is ready, the teacher will show up".
In truth, teachers are always around us, we as students are not always ready for the lesson. If you are serious about writing a dynamic cover letter, I never hesitate to recommend Jim Sweeney.
