House training presents the following problem for you and your dog: getting your dog to pee and poo where you taught him to do so. People who took for granted housetraining end up doing a bad job juggling a smelly house, smelly furniture and furnishings, and an unpredictable pet that otherwise could have been a wonderful one. Check out the following ideas on how to have a dog that knows his manners right from an early age.
Dogs are by heart neat animals, and are known over the hundreds of years for not soiling the place where they stay. Puppies as young as one month old know that they ought to defecate only outside their crate, or their "den." Right from the first day of your puppy at home, he needs to start getting trained about the idea of a "bathroom." Try a box or basket in the balcony, bathroom or hallway as a makeshift toilet, the opening to be covered with a newspaper and plastic films. Sometimes, the toilet could be simply several sheets of newspaper on the floor, at some corner away from the living space.
Now, if your puppy is going to either poo or pee, he will look for the best place to do that. A sampling of doggie actions that indicate something is afoot is the puppy sniffing the floor while circling about, or running up to the owner with plenty of fidgeting. If your puppy runs to you with these signs, or you spot him about to defecate, pick him up and place him nearest the box, basket or paper. When your puppy does urinate or defecate on the designate area, tell him clearly and affectionately "Good boy/girl" and "Good poo poo/ pee pee", while applying plenty of pats and caresses.
However, if you catch the puppy not defecating in the correct area, pick the puppy up at once, tell him "No" in a firm and clear (but not belligerent) voice and stance, then bring him to the bathroom. Again, if he does a good job after the correction, lavish praise on him so he knows he did right. If you do not catch him and all you chance upon is a pile of dirt, don't be angry be with the dog; in such a case, all you can actually do is clean up the mess and try to catch him sooner next time. Closely watching and observing the dog is actually the important start to house training your dog.
A smart puppy will get what you mean in a few days at most. One thing to remember about the dog's past accidents is that you are obliged to get rid of the odor. Everyone knows that a dog will want to defecate again in a place that holds the odor of his past waste.
Most adult dogs eventually learn to defecate outside, which is actually a good goal. Nevertheless, if you are house training your dog, you need to be vigilant about the cleanliness and hygiene of the surroundings in order to avoid any chance of a certain infection or health problem spreading. Have plastic bags and toilet paper ready with you together with a plan for how frequent to clean the house or yard of the dog's or puppy's waste.
