Crate Training your dog is one of the most effective and efficient ways to train a puppy or dog. Remember that repetition is necessary. Your puppy will not understand what you want unless you repeatedly show him/her the desired behavior many times.
The single most important aspect of dog and puppy training is that you reward and praise your dog or puppy each and every time she does the right thing. Keep in mind also that your puppy does not know what is expected and must be shown the proper place to eliminate, and when.
The more time you spend with your puppy or dog, the quicker and easier it will be to train her. Praise your puppy when he eliminates outside instead of in the house or chews his own toys instead of your shoes.
Establish a routine which will increase the chances that your puppy will eliminate in the right place. When he does, you should praise and reward him immediately. Don't wait to get in the house, give him a snack or play with him on the spot. This way he will associate eliminating outdoors with good.
Crate training should be like a game you play with your puppy, so make it a positive experience. Great introduction to crate is by giving him special treats - he receives a treat only when he is in the crate. This way the treats become associated with the crate.
Your puppy should only be in a crate when you are at home. At night, give your puppy an opportunity to eliminate every hour, by taking him outside. Once outside, give him about three to five minutes, then take him back to the crate. Repeat this through the night, but set alarm clock to every three hours, so you can get some sleep.
After about a week, if it has been successful (no crate messing) then you can set the alarm for way through your sleep time. When you wake up in the morning, take your puppy outside before you do anything else. Then do whatever you do in the morning and walk your puppy one more time before going off to work.
If possible, try to keep a diary of when your puppy eliminates. Once you know what time of day he usually needs to eliminate, you can begin taking him out only at those times. After he has eliminated, you can have a play. Still, supervision should be maintained through time while inside the house.
