A very good relationship between you and your pet consists of mutual understanding, but how can you achieve that? By means of methods, of course, though you should not be alarmed if you encounter different methods and different experts because the outcome is the same: getting your dog to listen to you, not to damage any goods in your house, to behave correspondingly to your commands and so on. Some special methods are required when you desire to teach your dog not to be aggressive and to cease barking when unnecessary, because it is general knowledge some dogs start barking at most inappropriate times, when you would like them to follow your commands instead.
As you should expect, a well-known method is the one that suggests offering rewards to the pet in case he behaves accordingly. It is a token of your appreciation towards him, and indicates that you accepted his behavior. It is a slow process, since you must clarify the command to the dog and repeat it until he finally acts correctly: when you make a "roll over" command for example and he behaves in the manner you told him, you have to give him a treat and praise him; otherwise the command is repeated, the dog must be guided in order to understand and if it's successfully followed, the reward is given.
Different Methods, Different Aids
Aids are required in many methods, such as whistles or special tool you can find at any pet shop near your house. These tools facilitate the progress of understanding, they signal to the dog that a command has been made: the clicker method is one of these, of which experts in the field think the world. It consists of positive response from the trainer and never negative response: if the pet obeys, he's given a treat, otherwise he never gets punished; when you learn to master a clicker, bought from specific shops, this technique will definitely work for you.
This clicker system of training has thrived especially in the whale-training field, and its success is proven with dogs, too: as long as the owner is persistent in making a click when the animal's behavior is the one desired, and he gives him the reward every time, the pet learns to develop a conditional instinct in connection with the sound of the click, and he will emulate the wishes of his master to hear that sound again and to be, thus, rewarded.
There are downsides to every method, but techniques that call for negative response from the trainer, if inappropriate behavior is involved, seem to bear quite a few risks. In other words, if the owner has the dog punished in case it eats the cherry tarts, the animal understands it's an undesired behavior, but just in the strict presence of the master. If you leave home, it will continue on eating the cherry tarts made especially for you perhaps. Consequently, this method is not very good for the owner, nor for the pet. However, it is recommended that you devise a list with what you think your dog should learn, when searching for an expert trainer, to give him important guidelines.
