When getting a new dog or a new puppy it is always good to know some dog obedience training to get your dog into shape, and to prevent behavioral problems. The sooner you start obedience training your dog the sooner you can move onto to more enjoyable and playful things like taking your dog for a walk, or teaching him new dog tricks.
The first dog obedience tip is to start training your dog as soon as possible. By training your dog as soon as possible will you already begin to start putting an end to your dog's behavioral problems that he may have ingrained from the previous owner, or if its a new puppy from playing with the pack. New puppies learn everything from their litter mates and their mother/father so once you first get them they may be rather unruly.
The next dog obedience tip is to make sure you educate yourself in all sorts of dog obedience training techniques and methods. This will allow you to tackle your dog's behavior problems and induce obedience training techniques that will be helpful to you. Certain techniques are only appropriate for certain kinds of dogs so make sure you read up about it. We have a shock collar guide, as well as crate training techniques available so far and there will be more dog obedience training tips on the site soon.
The third dog obedience tip is to make sure you use rewards to reinforce behavior positively rather than punishments that negatively reinforce. Let's face it, dogs most likely won't understand what they are being punished for unless you correct them exactly at the time of the behavior, which isn't always available. All sorts of professionals highly commend positive reinforcement as it is less cruel to the dog and very effective. Negative reinforcement will create a fearful training environment for your dog and will be counter productive to your training. Also the lack positive reinforcement will limit your ability in training and also create frustration.
The last dog obedience tip is one that I can't stress enough be persistent and repeat tricks, and often. Persistence will pay off over time as your dog adapts to the training and it is successful. People usually take more than just a fast lesson to learn anything, and your dog is the same way as well. Your dog will reward you for years if they are properly trained. If you make the training fun for you and your puppy you will be less likely to get bored and your puppy will not get distracted.
