1. Be Consistent: I always try to be consistent while training my dog. For example, you don't want your dog to get on the couch. So, for the first few days you are consistent with making it get off when he jumps up. But then one evening you are tired and it's just easier to let him stay. The next day you decide it's not okay again. This type of on-again/off-again training sends mixed messages to your dog.
2. Train every Day: Be sure to work in at least one training session a day although it's preferable to fit in several. Repetition is how a dog learns.
3. Work for Short Time Periods: You don't have to spend huge blocks of time everyday training. Breaking things up in to short 5 minute sessions helps to keep your dog motivated and also allows you to squeeze into a busy schedule. It's sometimes easier to fit in 4 or 5 short sessions than one long session.
4. Train When Your Dog is Hungry: If you use treats when training, your dog can be more highly motivated when he is hungry.
5. Use High Value Treats: Using "high value" treats can help motivate your dog. A "high value" treat is something that is extra yummy and smelly. A piece of dog kibble would be considered "low value" while a small cube of cooked chicken breast or liver would be considered "high value." High value treats are especially helpful when dealing with distractions.
6. Use Small Moist Treats: Not only do you want a high value treat, you want something that is soft and small. Your dog should not have to chew it. If a dog has to take the time to chew up a treat, they have forgotten why they were rewarded by the time they are done! Small (1/4 inch) chunks of chicken, liver or hot dog work great. I've also found that Pounce Cat Treats work well when treat training my dog.
7. Don't Push too Hard: Sometimes us humans decide to jump ahead and ask for a behavior before a dog is ready. This just sets them up for failure and quite often confuses them. Take really small steps and make sure a dog has part of a command down before moving on to the next. For example when teaching stay-many times we move too quickly with trying to walk around them or away from them before they have the stay down with us directly in front of them.
8. End on a Positive: It's always good to end on a positive note. End your sessions with something your dog does well and can succeed at.
9. Praise, Praise, Praise: Make life a party! Give your dog tons of verbal praise when they do something right and if they do something especially well give them a "jackpot." A jackpot is several treats given quickly one right after the other. Make sure you are using an excited happy voice when giving your verbal praise.
I always try to keep the above tips in mind when training my dog. If you follow these tips also, they should help you have greater success and help keep things more fun!
