Let's Get Started....
There are many difficulties and challenges to overcome when trying to train a dog or puppy, especially an inadequately trained adult. Often it can be stressful and tiresome but the reward of having an obedient dog at the end of the day its worth the challenge. Like any pack dwelling animal, dogs use there alpha status to determine who is pack leader. This is why early in the relationship you must develop a dominate alpha position with your dog. Your dog will be looking for a leader, if you do not take the position, they will become alpha out of a natural need for hierarchy. It can sometimes be difficult or confusing to know the best methods of obtaining and retaining this position. There are a few useful tips that will help you to succeed in raising a healthy, lovable, obedient dog.
1. The earlier you begin training, the easier it will be, so do not wait.
2. You should always eat first, then allow your dog to eat afterward. This will let your dog know his roll in the pack (your household).
3. You should always enter and exit doorways before your dog to further establish your alpha position.
4. Negative reinforcement should be implied when your dog has done something bad. Inversely, positive reinforcement is a must when your dog has done something good. This will help them to understand the difference between what is right and wrong within your pack (your household).
5. Never feed your dog from the dinner table. Avoiding human food & table scraps is never a bad idea.
6. Your attitude is essential in this process. You must use your mannerisms and attitude to portray yourself the way you want to be perceived by your dog.
7. You want to be a mother to your dog not a friend, this is especially important when they are being bad. Lifting your dog by the back of the neck and placing them aside is your best bet. You must give them a few minutes until they have calmed down. Once they have relaxed pet them lightly.
8. Shouting or hitting should ONLY be used if they have committed a "capital punishment" I.E. Dog biting. Using shouting or hitting as a constant method of training will only instill fear in your dog.
9. In the wild a pack dog will never spend a minute alone. Therefore, when you leave your dog home alone, they will miss you and possibly act out. Placing your dog into a kennel or secure location can reduce the possibility of damages.
Using the above tactics will greatly improve your chances of success at training your dog along with patience and the drive to want your pet to be a obedient animal.
